Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) Africa is a high-profile initiative originally developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Indian Education NGO Pratham to promote evidence-informed education programming in Africa. TaRL Africa, now headquartered in Kenya, works to improve basic reading and arithmetic skills of children on the African continent through the TaRL approach.  We aim to reach 3 million children in the next five years. Key countries of operation include Kenya, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Zambia where we work on contextualizing the TaRL approach.


Role Summary

The Finance Associate will support the Senior Finance Associate in the provision of a high quality operational efficiency including accounts payable, budgets and forecasts, financial invoicing. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Account Payables
  • Processing of invoices, Requisition for Payments and travel expense reports.
  • Posting processed invoices, payments and expense reports in the financial management system
  • Interact with vendors to answer questions and resolve issues.
  1. Budget Forecasts
  • Assist Snr Finance Associate and Operations Director with assembling annual budgets and forecasts in accordance with the annual planning cycle for country and central offices.
  1. Financial Planning across Core and Sponsored Fund
  • Support Snr Finance associate in Consolidating finances to produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial management information and reports across all TaRL Africa  offices.
  • Support in monthly general ledger review, monitor and review spending and reporting for management and external donors.
  •  Monitor cash position including preparation of remittance requests on a timely basis.
  •  Prepare monthly statutory deductions PAYE, NSSF, NHIF, NITA, remittances and mid-month
  • Support in coordinating internal and external audits and ensure that audit recommendations are
  • Review medical claims by staff on self-funded portion of the medical cover
  • Review correct expense coding and authorization; and facilitate timely Petty cash Reimbursements.
  1. Support the Snr Finance Associate in analysis of finances, managing procurement, and logistics services across all TaRL Africa offices to maintain operational efficiency.



Requirement Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Commerce/Business Administration in Accounting or finance or other relevant qualifications; plus
  • CPA or Acca Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years’ work experience in an INGO
